Marta Vashchuk

Marta Vashchuk graduated from Kyiv State I. K. Karpenko-Kary Theatre, Cinema and Television University. She studied at the Sasha Prakhova Studio in Kyiv, Ukraine. She is a multimedia artist who uses various techniques including painting, graphics, photography, video, audio, sculpture, and installations. Personal exhibitions:

Vashchuk created Verge or white-white snow in 2016, in the aftermath of the Maidan revolt known as the “Revolution of Dignity”. The artist visualises and renders materially the feelings and values that prevailed during this violent episode: fear, dignity and humanitarianism. Like Emil Schumacher, she does not work with figurative images, but rather intends to generate subjective impressions and to question human attitudes during conflicts: how is it possible to discern the difference between good and evil? Vashchuk's expressive style of work connects her to the post-World War II artists who used abstract methods to transcend form. For example, the German abstractionist artist Emil Schumacher viewed the artistic process not as something subject to theoretical constructions, but as something physically and sensually. Schumacher took Nature and its vitality as an example for his work. In this project, Marta Vashchuk also does not consciously work with figurative images, but instead seeks to convey a subjective state through her works, trying to transform recognizable images and overcome the density of the material world, and raises questions: "When does a person become non-human? When does one cross the line? Where is this line, and is it possible to capture this action of transition from one state to another?" The largest work in format (107×1540 cm) and striking in its expressiveness - "The Verge or White White Snow" was completed in 2016. The artist visualizes and materializes the feelings and values that prevailed during this violent episode: fear, dignity, and humanism. This is a symbolic path to freedom through confrontation, which lies on the snow darkened by the struggle. This work also interacts with the viewer as an object, it turns into a boundary that cannot be unnoticed in any space, for this purpose the artist consciously uses this format to convey the feeling of the burden of matter.

"Identification of Personality" A4 sheets, like neglected documents that once recorded accurate information, possibly about a person or an event from their life, but now they have faded and ink from letters and sentences has transformed into large stains that carry a different meaning, leaving the previous one without any sense. Perhaps when life unexpectedly ends, the meaning of why it happened acquires different meanings. Project Description The first part of the "Identification of Personality" series was started after the events on the "Maidan" and the beginning of the Russian war against Ukraine in 2014, and now the series continues from 2022, when the whole world finally recognized this war. Each A4-sized work has the format of a document and symbolizes the missing, buried, killed, kidnapped civilian and military Ukrainians by Russian aggressors.
